Stacey Dooley: Saving the Cybersex Girls & Reggie Yates: Race Riots (CASE STUDIES)

Stacey Dooley's Cyber Sex Scandal documentary featuring on BBC 3 focuses specifically on the new upcoming internet based 'forced' sexual relations between men and children ranging from 11-18 years old in the Philippines. The documentary introduces the audience to what Cyber Sex actually is which involves men/woman but a larger demographic of men exploiting Filipino children online through FaceBook. In the documentary we learn that the reason for the huge Filipino women being a victim of cyber sex is due to the rise of cheap internet access in the country as well as the fact that because it is a third world country, many of the women participating are poor and in need of money, thus making them easy targets to these men who would easily pay them for completing any task that they so desire. This year alone 139 British people alone have been investigated for paying to watch Filipino children online, the UN suspect that there are up to 750,000 people online who hunt constantly for children to exploit for their sexual desire. In the documentary we witness a woman (Lennie King)  who works for an organisation involved in hunting and tracking down the paedophiles created a fake account using the Filipino child 'Sweetie' after realising that the European and African children were not as successful, after which there was a huge swamp of predators who "wanted her to remove her bra, play with herself, sometimes have sex with her siblings, things like that it went very far". Stacey Dooley informs us that even mothers 'pimp' out their own children on the internet to make money for their families, a lot of the mothers attempt to do it themselves but after seeing a huge spike in the interest of younger women they turn to their own children. After watching this documentary I have realised that it displays a lot of the undercover things that you do not normally hear about, especially the fact that the main three countries that are the main predators for the young Filipino children stem from the UK, US and Germany, three well known and thriving countries are the ones that are exploit these children which is actually quite horrific and says a lot about the things that could happen behind closed doors.

Reggie Yates Race Riots: the documentary which featured on BBC 3 focuses on the town Ferguson a year on from when Mike Brown an unarmed black teenager was shot six times by a Police Officer. Reggie Yates being a black man even states in the documentary that “As a black man, I can’t help feeling that if I lived here, it could have been me,”  and as we go on in the documentary we see that it could have been since that year in the US 176 black people have died at the hands of federal officers and in the town of Ferguson where over 70% of the population is black and nearly all of those that are enforcers of the law are white and most people who even attend the courts who get fined for small issues such as driving through a red light, the 'sagging pants' offence are all black but it seems as though all these laws are some how structured to target the black demographic in the first place. Clifton Kinnie who was Reggie Yates 'tour guide' giving him an insight into what it was like in Ferguson, and an activist in the Riots that went on after Michael Browns death ended the documentary with the words 'I just want freedom' using an annecdote of his little brother wanting to grow up as a black boy and not have the colour of his skin justify who he is and have criminal jurisdictions placed against him for being black, also. This in turn reminded me a lot of the Martin Luther King speech, further alluding to the fact that in America and in a lot of other places there still is a huge stigma and stereotype placed against black people. In the documentary we also saw the support of people within Ferguson for the police officer who shot Michael Brown as well as people who supported the law enforcers in general and majority of the people there being white, and only one person their was black. For me what was strange in the scenario was when two black boys came to the protest the black man was the one who said 'oh here we go' obviously indicating he assumed there would be trouble. Although both sides stand for equality and peace they both have ways of excluding each other racially even if they do not openly say they are 'racist' there is evidence which states otherwise.

News Report: Dstrkt Club

It has come to the attention that a club in London known as DSTRKT has almost 'altered racist' views against women who are darker or of a larger size, on the weekend before the 1st of October a woman alleged two of her friends were denied entry to the club because of their size and race. Lin Mei, who was invited to the club by a promoter, claims that on arrival two of her friends (Reisha and Tasha) were asked to stand on the other side of the road so that the manager could see them. At this point the manager described the girls as "too dark" and "overweight" before refusing them entry. Protesters gathered outside of the club after hearing what happened and the club has been held under a lot of scrutiny by celebrities such as the artist Omarion who refused to attend the club when visiting London and Tameka Empson the BBC Soap Star who was invited to the club after winning an award but tweeted that she wouldn't go because she 'probably wouldn't be allowed in'.

In my opinion I think that this is a way of people finally understanding the hardships that darker skinned black females face, and even the larger females too, it is bad enough that society has already categorized black females but to put them into another bracket is quite shocking, although it has been going on for quite a while in different places so for the sudden uproar in it now just because of one nightclub is worth questioning.

Skyfall and Kingsman Comparison

Both Skyfall and Kingsman (Both British movies) have shown a great amount of success in the Gross profit region, Skyfall managing to break through the stigma of the other previous Bond movies and made it to $1 billion internationally and became one of the most successful in the franchise, although Kingsman did not do as well it still made a decent amount of $128,261,724 considering the fact that it was not a sequel as James Bond was but simply stood on its own with a gentle push of having a successful director as Matthew Vaughn who directed Kick-Ass and X-Men First Class, there wasn’t much else to make it stand out off the shelf, especially with the huge amount of competition with sticking with the same ‘MI6 and Spy genre’ that his been running its way through the Film Industry since the mid 90s with movies like Men In Black, The James Bond sequels and The Bourne Identity. However despite that it still managed to create quite a good profit which may be because it appealed to a newer form of audience.

Kingsman: The Secret Service was centred around Eggsy, a misfit teenager from England whose Dad (before he was murdered) was a Kingsman Agent, which later on in the film Eggsy turned out to train in his father’s footsteps and become one. There was a chronological narrative structure (linear) throughout the movie as we the audience saw the various disruptions and issues Eggsy was faced with as he was facing them which therefore built a connection with the audience. As mentioned before both movies are British and were set and filmed in Britain however Kingsman pays attention to the grittier side of Britain showing more realistic elements of the suffering a mother goes through after the loss of a husband and the troubles Eggsy went through in the movie in order to help his family e.g. dropping out of extra-curriculum activities. Baring this in mind there is still typical British iconography for example the ‘bull dog’ which also features in the Bond movie right at the beginning, there was also the scenery at the pub throughout the movie which is ideal to an international viewer, this is where stereotypes come into play, but not necessarily in a negative light, it is simply done to infuse profit as because it is a British movie, people who are not from Britain want to see the typical ‘British’ setting.

Skyfall the 23rd Installment to the James Bond sequels although set in the same place and from the same action thriller genre it focuses on a different aspect. The James Bond movies tend to target a much older audience due to the sophisticated dialogue used and the general approach the characters have to one and other, it is much more efficient in the way that it is run and has less comical references than Kingsman had in my opinion because it did not need comedy in order to make the viewers focus as the viewers would’ve been in the ‘James Bond’ fan base typically for quite a considerable amount of time. Skyfall also had a linear structure, starting straight into action with the ‘assumed death’ of agent 007 which in its own kept the audience captivated right from the start. Skyfall has much more of a masculine ideology and characteristics throughout the movie than Kingsman did, both the protagonist and the antagonist were males both having high status.

In conclusion although both movies follow the same genre they still remain quite different however tend to both incorporate similar attributes from other movies e.g.  Captain America: Winter Soldier, in terms of revealing the real plan of the technocratic cryptocracy but also in Skyfall there is some links to the Dark Knight, for example when James Bond is pronounced dead and he is aimlessly walking around getting drunk he is only pulled back to 'save London' much like Bruce Wayne's only motivation is saving Gotham after being constantly cooped up in his mansion doing nothing. However there is still a link to the dominant ideology in both movies, this being that in both movies the main heroes such as the Kingsman Agents and the Agents of Skyfall are both middle aged white men, this clearly shows that a lot of these large blockbuster movies always have a solid reflection of their roles in the industries with the movies that they make and always come off as the prestigious heroes.

News Report: The Muslim Britons who are persecuted for being atheists

Apostasy is the decision to renounce a faith or convert to another religion. The figures for people who say they have no religion has doubled since 2001. A lot of urban Muslims, half of them who were born in the UK believe that leaving Islam is a sin and can even be punishable by death Ayisha (not her real name) from Lancashire was just 14 when she began to question Islam after reading the Koran. She started rebelling over wearing the hijab, but eventually decided she wasn't a Muslim and the situation at home rapidly got worse her father holding her knife to her neck and saying that 'we might as well do it if you're going to bring this much shame to the family' she would get abused physically and eventually called child services where her father was convicted of child cruelty and now stays in the guardianship of her boyfriends father.
In my opinion I think that in religions like Islam tradition and honor is very sacred and should be kept in tact, however I do not believe that it is right for a person to be punished or threatened simply for having different views.

Fruitvale Station: Genre, Representation & Narrative

Fruitvale Station is a True Story based movie released in 2013 regarding the life of 22 year old Oscar Grant  Oscar Grant, a black Californian who wakes up on New Year's Eve 2008 and resolves to become a better person, but as he celebrates the New Year him and the community are faced with a terrible shock. The narrative structure of the movie is Non Linear and is told all the way through Oscars eyes up until his death, in which there is an omniscient narrative as we are able to see how everyone is effected by the loss of his life. In the beginning of the movie there is an audio flashback pertaining a conversation between him and his girlfriend which allows the audience to get a picture of this all american and quite happy family, this then juxtaposes with the following clip of the real footage from when Oscar Grant was murdered by an officer. To me the narrative was effective because it gave the audience a background to the life of Oscar and allowed us as the audience to connect emotionally with the character also which made the ending much more effective and presumably brought up the ratings of this movie also.

There was a large amount of coverage when it came to representation within this movie, the most obvious being the representation of black young males, the stereotype of them living a life relating to gang life (money, drugs and violence) did in fact get Oscar Grant killed although his life did not necessarily relate to it as much the police still assumed it did because of this stereotype (which has not been tarnished or changed since the death of Oscar Grant). Not only did it present this stereotype but it also showed the representation of working class Americans who typically have jobs relating to working in retail and earning minimum wage or making 'ends meat' and baring in mind their kids and striving to make a better life for them. The police were represented as being brutal and racist when it came to the end of the movie when they pulled Oscar and his friends off of the train simply because they thought it was him causing the trouble because of the colour of their skin, the police were forceful and did not respect any of their rights and had no legal right to obtain them, especially to handcuff them, so when one of the officers shot Oscar, whilst he was already on the ground and just refusing to roll over it was a serious offense, one that should not of been taking as lightly as it did in court.
The genre of this movie was a Biography/ Drama, as it was based on a true story it went through the life of Oscar being told through Oscar himself (played by Michael B Jordan) up until his last moments, it was a Drama also because there was a lot of tense scenes and conflict that happened within the movie such as his encounter with his manager when pleading for his job and his fight with an enemy whilst at prison.

I enjoyed this movie because I think it gave a real life perspective on what happened and what still is currently happening in America, it also shows the struggle black men in particular face when regarding police brutality in America and that it is not something they can just get away with, the movie acts as a voice in the dark for a lot of black males in America feeling as though they could be arrested at any point for simply being a black man in America and although the movie did not end as happily as you'd assume it still helps in getting the message across to millions of people around the world which I found greatly comforting.

10 Minutes on FOX NEWS and The Last Leg

The minutes I watched on Fox News showed the debate between three reporters, one man (Billy O'Riley)  and the other two female on the discussion of if there should be a woman president within the US. After watching the short clip I noticed a lot of open sexism towards the two females, the male reporter repeating the phrase 'there has got to be some kind of problem regarding a woman running office'. I think the fact that this is openly being discussed, aired on live TV and actually considered news is quite baffling. A lot of views like this being openly said on TV, especially to a lot of viewers would in turn effect the way others, especially a younger generation whose opinions are yet to form view the subject and other subjects also.

The Last Leg is a much more comical side of News Reporting compared to FOX News, due to the harsh jokes made regarding issues such as politicians and the way that the government have made decisions for the UK. I think the show is quite interesting due to the inclusion of people with disabilities and them being the ones doing the reporting and interviewing for example Alex Brooker interviewing Nick Clegg, during this interview we could see the harsh reality of politics and how 'out of the loop' most politicians are when it comes to the real world and how they make decisions.

News Item: Chris Brown and Karruche Tran

Following the recent break up of Chris Brown and Karruche Tran due to Browns lack of commitment and having a child with another woman whom he slept with whilst the two were still together. Chris Brown realised his lost after the success in Karruche's life and also her acceptance of the end of their relationship. However this was not enough for the rockstar and when the pair was spotted leaving the Playhouse Nightclub in Los Angeles. Chris Brown's appearance was unannounced and apparently the star was only there once it was said that the actress would be there. It appeared to be a rather uncomfortable scene. Which resulted in Chris Brown forcing himself into Karruche's car.

One in three children haven't been taught how to dial 999: Fears youngsters are not being given vital lessons in what to do during an emergency

  • Study found many children don't know the difference between 999 and 911
  • Nearly half of parents thought children weren't mature enough to know
  • Mumsnet survey raises fear children aren't learning vital emergency steps

  • Nearly half of parents have not taught their children how to dial 999 - and many youngsters think the emergency number is 911, a study found.
Many said their children were not mature enough to learn the life-saving skill.
Shockingly, an even greater number said their children would not know the difference between 999 and 911, the emergency number in the US. The survey raises fears that many youngsters are not being taught vital lessons about what to do in an emergency.
In my opinion I believe that this is quite unsettling as if in the 21st century young children do not know who to call when they are in an emergency then they have not been taught well and it also means an increase in a chance of danger or harm coming to the young children if they are not able to find a way of getting help

The Video Game Industry

When was it started?
The video games industry started as back as the early 1950's when academics began designing simple games, and artificial intelligence programs as part of their computer science research. Most video games didn't reach mainstream popularity until 70s/80s. As of 2015, there are eight generations of video game consoles, with the latest generation including Nintendo's "Wii U" , Microsoft's "Xbox One" , and Sony's "PlayStation 4".

 By Who? Where?
Ralph Baer was the creator of the multibillion-dollar gaming industry and majority of every virtual developer/publisher points to him as the moment the industry was born. Baer first had the idea for a gaming system centered around the home TV in 1951, but the idea lacked support from his bosses at Sanders. 15 years later, the idea was still with him, and by Oct. 20, 1966, he had created a working prototype, called The Brown Box. In 1972, Sanders partnered with Magnavox to bring that Brown Box to people's homes under the name Odyssey. The Odyssey paved the way for companies like Atari, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.

The Oddyssey

How big is it? How many people does it employ?
The video game industry of today is one of the fastest-growing fields in the entertainment industry. It employs more than 146,000 people, and according to the Entertainment Software Association, and Gartner there is a prediction that the market will top $111 billion by 2015.

Narratives, Representations & Audience

Within video games there are many different narratives
“Story in a game is like story in a porn movie: it’s expected to be there, but it’s not that important.” - John Carmack, who is the founder of ID Software and creator of Doom and Quake. The idea of narrative within video games makes it much more enticing and realistic for those who play the game, it gives a sense of escapism as they are satisfied with the idea of completing a 'quest'. For most video games the narrative is a protagonist who is the player themselves/hero who ends up taking on a quest which defeats the villains. This narrative is followed by video games such as The Last of Us, GTA, Assassins Creed
Women in GTA
In video games much like the rest of the media industry women (unless it is a video game targeted at women) the men are seen as much more dominant and have the leading role which is shown in The Last of Us which has one male player who is leading the female. In games like GTA women are often sexualized and seen as objects to lust after rather than having important roles.
Gamers often are divided into two categories: core and casual. A core gamer typically plays 20 hours per week and has purchased at least four games in the past six months. Casual gamers play half as often, core gamers make up over 25% of the gaming industry. In the UK the rate of women playing videogames has increased to 52% from the 49% it previously was, this is showing in a change of audience as typically most video games are targeted and male players for example FIFA containing no female players whatsoever may now start to include females. The average gamer is 31 years old, and 71 percent are age 18 or older. Nearly half (48 percent) of gamers are female and women over the age of 18 represent a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (36 percent) than boys age 18 or younger (17 percent)

What were the key milestones for the industry?
In 2013, the industry sold 160 million games and generated more than $21 billion in revenue, another key milestone is the creation of 3D Graphics

News Report

A teenager has been killed and two others injured after a fight broke out at a nightclub.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Society nightclub in Tower Street, Coventry, at 02:00 GMT.

"An 18-year-old man from Coventry was found fatally injured outside the club and later pronounced dead in hospital," a police spokesman said.

Another 18-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries and a 17-year-old boy was also hurt.

Tower Street was expected to remain closed for most of Sunday while forensic investigations take place.

Anyone who was in the nightclub who witnessed the disorder is urged to contact West Midlands Police on 101 or Crimestoppers.

I believe that in night clubs the level of security should be increased in order to protect these things from happening again, especially to people of a young age.

Demographics and Psychographics

Demographics are what the media and large businesses use to aid them pick the right audience for them, this audience is broken into different categories for example class, race, gender etc. Industries use demographics to help a product that is suffering within the world of media. For example if a particular magazine isn't selling a business could use demographics to help target a specific audience which would help the magazine sell more copies.

Psychographics
This is the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests and lifestyles. This area of research is used for the large industries to understand the minds of their potential audience and build their product based on that audiences interests. The industry creates a detailed customer profile based on all these attributes to create the perfect audience.

Pre Production: DVD COVER

To make my DVD cover I decided to use PhotoShop. Because I have a basic knowledge on how to use the software I knew that I would be able to execute the design decently. I first went on Google images and took a 'KEEP CALM' picture just so that I could use the blood splattering that was on the image. Using the selection tool in PhotoShop I selected a small patch of the off white background, I then copied this and placed the squares over the letters as well as the sign.

When this was done I looked back at other DVD Covers for inspiration and realised that majority of the titles were noticeable however the DVD covers that didn't have a person as the main image (the main way of captivating the audience) used quite bold fonts which is why I made the Name/Title so large. I picked 'Arial' as my font because it gave a very crisp and sophisticated feel. I also added a 'slogan' which is a significant quote within the teen series: 'Come on, I don't bite' I chose this because of its simplicity however it still has some form of effect/impact.

From looking at other inspiration from DVD Covers I noticed that there are certain small features that that they contain. I used the shape button on Photoshop and made a rectangle. Within the rectangle I wrote 'THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON' I made the colour a dark red to follow the blood splatter across the white background. In doing this it changed the image from looking like  poster to more like a DVD cover. Most 'series' DVD have this somewhere on the front cover or on the spinal part of the DVD and as I am only focusing on the first season I have decided to incorporate this within my work.

The last step was to make the spine for the DVD cover. To follow the pattern of using red (to connote the blood within the show) I have made the spine blood red and the text white in order to make it stand out against the background. I again added 'THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON' underneath the title as well as adding the DVD and Warner Bros logo to follow the conventions of an actual DVD cover.

Production: MORE MERCHANDISE

This is the front view of the mug. I am aiming to have all sections of the mug having some form of text or quote from the TV Series. This first one is obviously the University itself 'Malville University' which is attended by the younger cast. A lot of the scenes within the season (especially the first one) will be within the University so the mug will have a large connection with the show and the viewers would be able to connect with that. To create this I have used Adobe photoshop, placed an image of a mug from Google Images. I then got the typical 'college font' from 'Dafonts' and wrapped the text around the mug. I then added extra features such as the blood splatters.

This is a different mug however I have followed the same concept as the first mug but instead changed the words to 'BLOOD & GUTS'. I have chosen this text in particular because it relates to the Vampire Characters with the 'blood' but also one character in particular which is the oldest Draco brother: Alec. The 'guts' relate to him obviously because of his fascination with murdering and playing with the bodies of patients. I have decided that I would have a range of mugs based on the TV Show and some of these would potentially be featured in some of the shows to promote it. I am aiming to make the viewers want to collect all the different mugs that are made.

As a way of relating to my audience I have done something modern that all the target audience would have which is a mobile phone: typically from the apple brand but I am aiming to extend my range to android users also depending on how well the phone cases do. I used the website online called 'skinit.com' to create case. As I wanted it to be quite simple I put the university name again using the typical College font and then underneath I used fangs to represent what the show is clearly about. The fangs used are much more 2D and flat surfaced.

Dracula's Son: Treatment - Pilot Episode

DRACULA’S SONS

APRIL YOUNG, 18, an intelligent young girl with crystal blue eyes and freckles around her slender nose rents a room at the DARKE Brothers house when she moves to MALVILLE, a small town in Atlanta to start University. At the start of the pilot episode April is in her car driving up Malville, after a few seconds she gets close to the sign that says ‘Welcome to Malville’ and she notices a small splatter of blood across the letters ‘M-A-L’. She shudders as she has a flashback to her parents being covered with blood after they were murdered when she was 10 years old, April pulls up to a mediaeval looking building with mould growing on the walls and huge dark trees surrounding it.

She walks in through the already open doors and collects her entrance and admission forms from a woman with a tight bun and grey suit. In front of the vending machine she spots a young girl around her age with wild ginger hair down past her shoulders and deep emerald green eyes, the young girl was struggling with a hell of a lot of text books that soon landed all over the floor. April, feeling sorry for her and needing a friend helps her pick up the books, after some discussion between them she finds out the girls name is MARIA LEONARDS (who will be a main character and a good friend to April throughout the season) and that they are both studying the same course. Maria asks April where she is staying and April responds, telling her that she will be staying with the DARKE Brothers, Maria automatically freaks out mentioning all the ‘rumours’ spread about how strange one of the brothers are, as well as the never reported ‘missing students’ after each semester.

A few hours later April looks around the college to see if she can find her classes however when walking down the corridor she somehow gets distracted and results in bumping into a group of people. She watches as the impact causes one of the boy’s coffee to spill however he moves almost majestically the brown liquid avoiding his skin. The boy very rudely ridicules and laughs at April however flirts with her at the same time. April feeling very embarrassed walks past the group of people. There is a flashback to when her mum and dad were at the dinner table talking about their dreams for April to go to Malville university just like her grandparents did and make the most of herself, the flashback takes a sharp turn and there is the image of her parents bodies covered with blood.

An hour, or so after April finishes looking for her classes she heads over to the ‘DARKE House’ to see what all the fuss is about. As she follows the route given by the GPS she notices a significant change in the skies, less sun. She pulls up at a house that looks fairly modern however is far larger than she expected. April steps out of the car, pulling her large suitcase to the overly large front door. She rings the doorbell and a young man answers, his eyes a mixture of greens and browns and his dimples deepening when he smiled. He introduced himself as ‘ALEC’ and welcomes her into the house, helping her with her luggage. Alec shows her around the house avoiding one room which he says ‘is never really in use’ and ignores the questions that April brings up about the room. Finally April goes into her room, quickly falling asleep as soon as she lies down.

ALEC DARKE sighs putting on his gloves ready for his shift at the local hospital, his eyes flash black as he remembers his lack of blood from throughout the day and his fangs quickly peak through he shakes his head and walks outside to start his car. There is a flashback to a house with wooden floorboards and blood splattered across them and then a pair of feet strolling around the puddles of crimson blood. After a while Alec walks into the hospital smiling at the patients and other doctors, one doctor approaches Alec whispering that there is a patient waiting for him in Ward B. Alec nods and heads up there, as soon as the door opens his eyes flash black again but he does not stop his fangs from being released, he grins a sinister smile and walks up to the patient who screams in fear. There is a flashback again and this time the blood on the floorboards leads up to two bodies: April’s parents. The footsteps continue walking around the bodies however slowly the camera moves upwards until the mixture of green and hazel eyes become familiar: it was Alec. The flashback ends and Alec slowly brings his teeth down to pierce the patient’s neck and the scene cuts.

April wakes up feeling uncomfortable and heads downstairs in search of some food, she walks downstairs and enters the kitchen picking up and taking a bite out of an apple. A voice from behind her speaks ‘I’ve never seen biting an apple look so… interesting’. April drops the apple in fear and sees the boy who ridiculed her through the corridor. He asks whether she is a residence here and she nodded. ‘My name is DRACO DARKE’ he smiles looking very narcissistic and hands over the apple she dropped even though she never saw him pick it up.
The pilot ends with April taking the apple and staring at Draco in shock.
