Demographics are what the media and large businesses use to aid them pick the right audience for them, this audience is broken into different categories for example class, race, gender etc. Industries use demographics to help a product that is suffering within the world of media. For example if a particular magazine isn't selling a business could use demographics to help target a specific audience which would help the magazine sell more copies.
Psychographics
This is the study of personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests and lifestyles. This area of research is used for the large industries to understand the minds of their potential audience and build their product based on that audiences interests. The industry creates a detailed customer profile based on all these attributes to create the perfect audience.
To make my DVD cover I decided to use PhotoShop. Because I have a basic knowledge on how to use the software I knew that I would be able to execute the design decently. I first went on Google images and took a 'KEEP CALM' picture just so that I could use the blood splattering that was on the image. Using the selection tool in PhotoShop I selected a small patch of the off white background, I then copied this and placed the squares over the letters as well as the sign.
When this was done I looked back at other DVD Covers for inspiration and realised that majority of the titles were noticeable however the DVD covers that didn't have a person as the main image (the main way of captivating the audience) used quite bold fonts which is why I made the Name/Title so large. I picked 'Arial' as my font because it gave a very crisp and sophisticated feel. I also added a 'slogan' which is a significant quote within the teen series: 'Come on, I don't bite' I chose this because of its simplicity however it still has some form of effect/impact.
From looking at other inspiration from DVD Covers I noticed that there are certain small features that that they contain. I used the shape button on Photoshop and made a rectangle. Within the rectangle I wrote 'THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON' I made the colour a dark red to follow the blood splatter across the white background. In doing this it changed the image from looking like poster to more like a DVD cover. Most 'series' DVD have this somewhere on the front cover or on the spinal part of the DVD and as I am only focusing on the first season I have decided to incorporate this within my work.
The last step was to make the spine for the DVD cover. To follow the pattern of using red (to connote the blood within the show) I have made the spine blood red and the text white in order to make it stand out against the background. I again added 'THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON' underneath the title as well as adding the DVD and Warner Bros logo to follow the conventions of an actual DVD cover.
This is the front view of the mug. I am aiming to have all sections of the mug having some form of text or quote from the TV Series. This first one is obviously the University itself 'Malville University' which is attended by the younger cast. A lot of the scenes within the season (especially the first one) will be within the University so the mug will have a large connection with the show and the viewers would be able to connect with that. To create this I have used Adobe photoshop, placed an image of a mug from Google Images. I then got the typical 'college font' from 'Dafonts' and wrapped the text around the mug. I then added extra features such as the blood splatters.
This is a different mug however I have followed the same concept as the first mug but instead changed the words to 'BLOOD & GUTS'. I have chosen this text in particular because it relates to the Vampire Characters with the 'blood' but also one character in particular which is the oldest Draco brother: Alec. The 'guts' relate to him obviously because of his fascination with murdering and playing with the bodies of patients. I have decided that I would have a range of mugs based on the TV Show and some of these would potentially be featured in some of the shows to promote it. I am aiming to make the viewers want to collect all the different mugs that are made.
As a way of relating to my audience I have done something modern that all the target audience would have which is a mobile phone: typically from the apple brand but I am aiming to extend my range to android users also depending on how well the phone cases do. I used the website online called 'skinit.com' to create case. As I wanted it to be quite simple I put the university name again using the typical College font and then underneath I used fangs to represent what the show is clearly about. The fangs used are much more 2D and flat surfaced.
APRIL YOUNG, 18, an intelligent
young girl with crystal blue eyes and freckles around her slender nose rents a
room at the DARKE Brothers house when she moves to MALVILLE, a small town in
Atlanta to start University. At the start of the pilot episode April is in her
car driving up Malville, after a few seconds she gets close to the sign that
says ‘Welcome to Malville’ and she notices a small splatter of blood across the
letters ‘M-A-L’. She shudders as she has a flashback to her parents being
covered with blood after they were murdered when she was 10 years old, April
pulls up to a mediaeval looking building with mould growing on the walls and
huge dark trees surrounding it.
She walks in through the
already open doors and collects her entrance and admission forms from a woman
with a tight bun and grey suit. In front of the vending machine she spots a
young girl around her age with wild ginger hair down past her shoulders and
deep emerald green eyes, the young girl was struggling with a hell of a lot of
text books that soon landed all over the floor. April, feeling sorry for her
and needing a friend helps her pick up the books, after some discussion between
them she finds out the girls name is MARIA LEONARDS (who will be a main
character and a good friend to April throughout the season) and that they are
both studying the same course. Maria asks April where she is staying and April
responds, telling her that she will be staying with the DARKE Brothers, Maria
automatically freaks out mentioning all the ‘rumours’ spread about how strange
one of the brothers are, as well as the never reported ‘missing students’ after
each semester.
A few hours later April looks
around the college to see if she can find her classes however when walking down
the corridor she somehow gets distracted and results in bumping into a group of
people. She watches as the impact causes one of the boy’s coffee to spill however
he moves almost majestically the brown liquid avoiding his skin. The boy very
rudely ridicules and laughs at April however flirts with her at the same time.
April feeling very embarrassed walks past the group of people. There is a
flashback to when her mum and dad were at the dinner table talking about their
dreams for April to go to Malville university just like her grandparents did
and make the most of herself, the flashback takes a sharp turn and there is the
image of her parents bodies covered with blood.
An hour, or so after April
finishes looking for her classes she heads over to the ‘DARKE House’ to see
what all the fuss is about. As she follows the route given by the GPS she
notices a significant change in the skies, less sun. She pulls up at a house
that looks fairly modern however is far larger than she expected. April steps
out of the car, pulling her large suitcase to the overly large front door. She
rings the doorbell and a young man answers, his eyes a mixture of greens and
browns and his dimples deepening when he smiled. He introduced himself as
‘ALEC’ and welcomes her into the house, helping her with her luggage. Alec
shows her around the house avoiding one room which he says ‘is never really in
use’ and ignores the questions that April brings up about the room. Finally
April goes into her room, quickly falling asleep as soon as she lies down.
ALEC DARKE sighs putting on his
gloves ready for his shift at the local hospital, his eyes flash black as he
remembers his lack of blood from throughout the day and his fangs quickly peak
through he shakes his head and walks outside to start his car. There is a
flashback to a house with wooden floorboards and blood splattered across them
and then a pair of feet strolling around the puddles of crimson blood. After a
while Alec walks into the hospital smiling at the patients and other doctors,
one doctor approaches Alec whispering that there is a patient waiting for him
in Ward B. Alec nods and heads up there, as soon as the door opens his eyes
flash black again but he does not stop his fangs from being released, he grins
a sinister smile and walks up to the patient who screams in fear. There is a
flashback again and this time the blood on the floorboards leads up to two
bodies: April’s parents. The footsteps continue walking around the bodies
however slowly the camera moves upwards until the mixture of green and hazel
eyes become familiar: it was Alec. The flashback ends and Alec slowly brings
his teeth down to pierce the patient’s neck and the scene cuts.
April wakes up feeling
uncomfortable and heads downstairs in search of some food, she walks downstairs
and enters the kitchen picking up and taking a bite out of an apple. A voice
from behind her speaks ‘I’ve never seen biting an apple look so… interesting’.
April drops the apple in fear and sees the boy who ridiculed her through the
corridor. He asks whether she is a residence here and she nodded. ‘My name is
DRACO DARKE’ he smiles looking very narcissistic and hands over the apple she
dropped even though she never saw him pick it up.
The pilot ends with April
taking the apple and staring at Draco in shock.
Visual Codes: Fast cars, explosions, cities, roads, extremely dangerous stunts, women, guns.
All visual codes are used and act as conventions that action movies typically follow. Narrative: From the trailer we see the process of cars being stolen by a group of friends who consider themselves as 'family'. We then see the trials they face throughout the process of stealing the cars and not getting caught by the police. Technical codes: Establishing shots to show the different cities and places that they attend, close ups to show the emotions within the characters faces.
Film Poster
Brave
Visual codes: Background is dark green but also gives a 'cloudy atmosphere' which presents a mystical element. In the background we can see the letters "BRAVE' in capital letters inscribed with typical 'disney' compartments such as branches entwining something, flowers etc. Narrative: Forest in the background and girl carrying an arrow. You normally wouldn't consider a female to be carrying a bow and this shows the change from the stereotypical male being the 'hero'. Her position is at the foreground and she stands at looks directly at the camera.
Advert
Smiler
Technical Codes: Extreme close ups, slow motion
Visual Codes: Multicoloured lights to entice the audience which shows a magical and paradox environment. At the beginning there are bright and colourful cartoon like houses which also supports the idea of making the audience feel as though they are in a magical realm. Narrative: The start showed someone on the ride and then someone else joining and being captivated by the ride. "Almost as if they are under a spell" Audio: Nursery rhyme jingle attempting to follow the horror movie convention to make it seem more eerie.
Magazine Cover:
Vogue
Visual Codes: The font of the masthead is written in gold to make the colours used in the main image. As it is a 'wedding' picture the typical colours associated would be champagne. There is also a masthead, sell lines and article names. The sell lines are all in the colour white as they are meant to be 'elegant' and not draw away attention from the main image.
Music Video
Beyonce - 7/11
Technical Codes: Camera shots are done to make it seem as though she is recording herself. A lot of the scenes are cut up to make it look more robotic and modern. Visual Codes: Different parts of a house for example the balcony, bathroom, bedroom. It shows Beyonce and her dancers dancing around the different parts of these rooms which makes the audience feel involved and excited. Narrative: The house ''presumably" is Beyonce's and it tones down from the serious and meaningful music videos that she normally creates and focuses on a playful environment.

In order to further as well as expand my Teen Horror show I realize that I need to have direct contact with my target audience to see if they would be interested in my proposal as well as seeing if I need to make any modifications to it. I gave out copies of this questionnaire to approximately 20 females and 20 males in order to make sure that my results would be fair. The results that I get I will use to better and improve my narrative.
